There are a thousand and one remedies throughout history to remove lice. And this is an evil that has not been eradicated by many advances and technology that human beings have. Why? Well, first we will comment on what lice are, exactly, and then recommend the main remedies to fight from all the franks with lice. First of all, it is worth distinguishing between nits, which are the eggs of lice and lice, which are insects. Yes, because lice is a type of neopteran insect but without wings that has developed great mechanisms to stay as close as possible to its host. They affect all types of mammals, especially man. They feed on their blood, hair and skin of their host. For this they have developed very strong claws and legs with which they cling to the skin in order to feed. Throughout history all peoples tell stories of lice infestations, the oldest data being approximately between 6,900 and 6,300 years before Christ. This is one of the first documented infestations although it is suspected that they will probably have accompanied humans and mammals since much older times. In recent years they have gone from being a marginal phenomenon, associated with lack of hygiene, to being present in the school life of children. This is because the louse has developed a great resistance to the remedies applied against them and is also due to its ability to travel “from one host to another” as well as the ability to multiply thanks to nits. In this way, “having lice” is something that is already part of school life itself. However, we must not resist and not try to fight against them in order to protect both our children and ourselves.
What do you need to remove lice?
The first thing we need is to know for sure whether or not we have lice because every year in all schools there are cases of lice and nits, but it could be that our son or daughter does not have this problem. One of the quickest ways to recognize whether or not our children have lice is to continuously observe their hair, at least once a week. Another way to protect and protect ourselves is to use shampoos and anti-lice colognes although this does not free us 100% from not having them because, as we have said, they become immune to products used from one year to the next. To know if we have lice or not, we will perform, with a very fine comb a general brushing. We will observe that the comb comes out clean. If we find small white eggs, smaller than a grain of sand, it is a matter of considering that we can begin to be infected by lice.
Another sign is to scratch continuously, because when feeding on the blood, skin and hair of the host produce irritations in the scalp of the host. Another reason why its “itches” is due to the saliva of the louse that causes allergy in the host. It can also be the case that we have a louse, but for whatever reason, do not bite us. Therefore, we must observe our scalp in detail. As we have said, nits are a good clue, and they are smaller than a large sand. We can even confuse them with dandruff. Although the big difference is that, while dandruff comes off easily, nits and lice are much more difficult to remove from the scalp. Another clue that can help us because in blond hair it is much more difficult to find, is to detect reddish spots that form around areas where lice exist. All this, together, without forgetting any step, will help us confirm whether or not we have lice. Another unmistakable warning sign is school. Many times, they are the first to detect cases and this can also help us take more drastic measures. Thus, although we do not have them, we can apply lotions and home remedies to avoid infection.
Head lice are simply transmitted by jumping from head-to-head, or from host to host. They can stay in spaces “waiting” for the guest. Therefore, schools are a hotbed and a very rich source for lice to be “full” of guests and often come into contact with each other. Another issue that we cannot forget is nits. We can remove all lice but leave the nits. This is equally disastrous because after 7 days we will have lice again. Therefore, we must use a product that removes both lice and nits.
Instructions for removing lice
Pharmacy remedies. OTC products. The OTC firm presents several products, which used together can help us eliminate lice. These products are three: lotion and shampoo with Permethrin 1.5% (this is an active ingredient recommended by WHO) and OTC comb. Lotion and shampoo, thanks to Permethrin, block the central nervous system, paralyzing and affiliating them. That is, eliminating them. Finally, and to ensure that we do not have more lice and we or our children are clean, the special OTC comb is small enough to catch both lice and dead nits and thus eliminate them completely from the scalp. In any case, these products are applicable as long as children are over two years old. Anti-lice hat. Another option is to cover the hair, once we have applied the cologne or lotion, with an anti-lice cap. We can find it in pharmacies and parapharmacies and it helps the active ingredient that acts in said lotion to be more effective. So, we will first apply the lotion and then cover with the cap for about 10 minutes. Once this is done, we will pass the lendrera or special anti-lice brush, to remove them completely.
General cleaning. First of all, to avoid contagion at home it is best to be as careful with everything that comes into contact with the affected person: hat, scarf, gloves, towels. Everything has to be washed at least 50º in the washing machine and part of the rest of the clothes. We must take this measure into account if we do not want the whole family to be affected in a moment. Being neat in this sense we can avoid a contagion at the family level. Vinegar. Vinegar contains a type of acid, acetic acid that is very corrosive and therefore “cleans” deeply where it is used. This has been known since ancient times and has been used for the general cleaning of the house. In many cases it is a good substitute to kill germs. But this acid not only kills germs but also lice as well as nits since it is a pesticide. The way to use it is as follows: once you have washed your hair with normal shampoo, not with anti-lice shampoo, you will do, as a lotion, an application to all your hair with slightly hot vinegar. It will be left on for about ten minutes and if you prefer you can apply the hat. And it will rinse all the hair. It will dry and we will apply the lendrera to eliminate the remains that could have remained of both nits and lice. Natural options. We can also visit our herbalist. She can advise us on natural antibacterial products such as tea tree oil and that we can find in natural products that remove the heavy and odious louse. And all this in a natural way and without damaging our hair. Do not forget to comment on the age of both the child, possible pictures of allergies and other characteristics that make especially weak (pregnancy, old age, anemia ….) to the guest in question.
